Learning how to make a WordPress Website can either be easy, or hard…depending on the person and the way you go about doing it. Building a website using WordPress is one of the easiest ways though and in this post I’m going to show you how you can make a website for free and easy in 30 seconds. Don’t believe me? Well, luckily I have video proof to back up my words!

But first let’s get a little background as to what exactly WordPress is and why it’s a great choice for your website.

What is WordPress and Why Use It?

When I first started online I created my own websites. The hard way. It was actually fun for me…most of the time, but it required programmer knowlede (you know, code?), I dabble…and had taken some classes so I did all right. I’m no expert, but I was able to create a pretty nice looking site. But it took me a while, and it did cause me a few headaches.

Somewhere along the way I heard about WordPress and migrated all of my previous html websites over. Why did I do this? Well, forget that it was an easy to use open-source framework that had a huge community behind it (I believe in the millions!) and 10,000’s of developers. No, I heard they ranked better than html sites. And they were really really easy to set-up, so two big bonuses there.

Even though it is a lot easier to get going with WordPress than trying to code one yourself, installing WordPress can still be a little tricky. It’s okay once you know how, but…guess what? It’s even easier to do it with WordPress Express 🙂

Yeah, although I can code and even learned PHP so I could create my own WordPress themes, it can still be a pain sometimes to do things manually. Especially when time is an issue. Don’t know about you, but my time is limited. And so not only do I love WordPress Express because it’s fast and easy for me, but I like to teach people how to do what I do, so it is WAY easier for me to point them to this WordPress Website builder than for me to either a) build one for them or b) teach them how.

How To Do Keyword Research the Right Way

It’s a shame that so many people do keyword research wrong simply because they were taught incorrectly or hodgepodged the information online together into something they “think” will work. However, if you own a website and want to be found in the search engines it is essential you understand the right way to find keywords for your website so that you can be found naturally and easily for them – get more traffic, make more money.

If you have been feeling like you’ve been wasting your time or you’ve pulled all of your hair out trying to wrap your mind around this, fear not. You’re about to learn to love keywords! I did…yeah, I know I’m weird. I actually came up with a slogan, “so many keywords, so little time.”

There are only THREE things you need to make sure you are paying attention to when you do your keyword research. Three, that’s not too many right?

Effective Keyword Research in a Nutshell

#1: Low Competition – Making sure the keyword you are targeting has low competition is essential when you first start your search. If the competition is HIGH, scrap it. Sure, you could try for it – but why set yourself up for frustration or failure when you don’t have to?

What you want to be looking for when searching for low competition is the QSR (Quoted Search Results). As far as I know there is only one tool that will give you this information and that is Jaaxy. If you wanted to know what I and so many other marketers use for keyword research, there you have it.

The QSR tells you the EXACT number of competing pages in Google, and THAT’S your REAL competition. A good number to aim for is anything under 300 (meaning, 300 competing pages in Google, the closer to ZERO you are the easier it will be to rank.

So first KEYWORD RULE OF THUMB: Search for QSR under 300

#2: MUST GET Traffic – Instead of trying to go for the be all end all in a keyword, I like to aim for keywords I know I can get ranked for. You want to be adding quality content to your website regularly so why not just pick many keywords you know you can rank for and over time build a keyword empire?

It makes so much more sense to go for something you KNOW you can rank for than to go for something that would give you the MOST traffic, but you’ll never rank for.

The other bonus to these lower search volumes but low competition keywords you CAN rank for is…they tend to convert better too. So can you say, win-win? So if a search term gets over 50 searches, go for it. You have nothing to lose.

Second KEYWORD RULE OF THUMB: Search for keywords that get over 50 searches per month

#3: Choose Keywords That Make Sense – Obviously, you want your the title and content to make sense, so don’t pick keywords that make NO sense to the reader. That looks awkward…for everyone.

Third KEYWORD RULE OF THUMB: Must make sense

Okay, so with Facebook pages, Reverbnation and MySpace pages why on earth would a musician need their OWN website?

Online Real Estate, baby.

Let’s say that one of the three websites mentioned above no longer existed. Yeah, maybe Facebook will be around forever, maybe it won’t. I’ve learned there is really only one thing that you can count on…that change is inevitable.

So, let’s say you used one of the three as your HUB for years. That’s where you spent all your time building your network, that’s where you sent all of your fans and then suddenly *poof* it’s gone.

How would you feel?

I personally would be devastated. I actually had that happen with some content I had created years ago…I won’t go into it here, but let me tell you, it really showed me the importance of OWNING whatever it is I was working on. And THAT is why every musician needs a website.

But what do you do if you aren’t “tech savvy” and have no idea how to go about it and probably don’t have the funds to pay someone to do it for you?

You find a free website builder and or figure out WordPress on your own (WordPress makes it pretty easy these days). But the most important element is to OWN your own domain.

As a fan of many musicians, I have to say I much prefer their webpage. But maybe that’s just me.

When you have your own website you now have a place where you can build your on-line presence and CONTROL everything about it. You can obviously add buttons to the social media platforms where you can be found, because those are still very important to spreading the word. But you will no longer be relying on them with your future.

PLUS you can generate income from your website in more ways than just selling YOUR music.

What’s that, you say?

Yes, you can make sales on your music…that is the obvious goal. But did you know that you can also make money on the TRAFFIC that comes to your website whether they purchase your songs or not?

There are many different ways to monetize a website, from Google Adsense to making money as an affiliate for say…iTunes and Amazon. How cool would it be if you were making money on the sales of OTHER PEOPLE’S music?

I don’t want to confuse you or overwhelm you with any more details, you’re still probably stuck on the How Do You Build A Website idea, right?
