Why Every Musician Needs a Website

Find Out Why Every Musician Needs a Website:

Katsember Music

Okay, so with Facebook pages, Reverbnation and MySpace pages why on earth would a musician need their OWN website?

Online Real Estate, baby.

Let’s say that one of the three websites mentioned above no longer existed. Yeah, maybe Facebook will be around forever, maybe it won’t. I’ve learned there is really only one thing that you can count on…that change is inevitable.

So, let’s say you used one of the three as your HUB for years. That’s where you spent all your time building your network, that’s where you sent all of your fans and then suddenly *poof* it’s gone.

How would you feel?

I personally would be devastated. I actually had that happen with some content I had created years ago…I won’t go into it here, but let me tell you, it really showed me the importance of OWNING whatever it is I was working on. And THAT is why every musician needs a website.

But what do you do if you aren’t “tech savvy” and have no idea how to go about it and probably don’t have the funds to pay someone to do it for you?

You find a free website builder and or figure out WordPress on your own (WordPress makes it pretty easy these days). But the most important element is to OWN your own domain.

What’s cooler?

A Facebook Page that houses your music or a domain name WITH YOUR NAME OR BANDNAME in it?

As a fan of many musicians, I have to say I much prefer their webpage. But maybe that’s just me.

When you have your own website you now have a place where you can build your on-line presence and CONTROL everything about it. You can obviously add buttons to the social media platforms where you can be found, because those are still very important to spreading the word. But you will no longer be relying on them with your future.

PLUS you can generate income from your website in more ways than just selling YOUR music.

What’s that, you say?

Yes, you can make sales on your music…that is the obvious goal. But did you know that you can also make money on the TRAFFIC that comes to your website whether they purchase your songs or not?

There are many different ways to monetize a website, from Google Adsense to making money as an affiliate for say…iTunes and Amazon. How cool would it be if you were making money on the sales of OTHER PEOPLE’S music?

I don’t want to confuse you or overwhelm you with any more details, you’re still probably stuck on the How Do You Build A Website idea, right?

If you’re wondering why I have two, it’s because I’m greedy. Just kidding. Actually, I’ve had kat-tracks.com for years, before I knew what I was doing and WAY before the name Katsember ever came to pass. I was already getting quite a bit of traffic to kat-tracks so obviously I didn’t want to scrap it, but Katsember is my band now and something I want to BRAND. So I have two. End of story, deal with it.

But you only need one 😉

So to recap:

– Build A Website so that you OWN a piece of real estate online that you can build on and control for years to come

– Monetize Your Website – Make sales from both your music, as well as other’s, and even make money as an “affiliate” for businesses like Amazon, iTunes and more. Or simply use Google Adsense on your website so that you can possibly make a little money just from the traffic coming to your site

– Link Your Website to Social Media Platforms and gain followers and listeners

  1. Nice to connect on WA. Love your point of view and you deliver the message well. Don’t think you need the recap. Would have put the What’s cooler section in the body of the post instead of the end as it does make a dramatic impression. Good Stuff though.Good luck and God Bless!

  2. Thanks Chris and this was news to me that FB is shutting pages down now without warning! Although I can’t say that I didn’t see that coming. Thanks for your comment and information!

  3. Hey Kat! 🙂 Chris Lee here from WA!

You’re absolutely right that we need to own our content. I also heard FB shutting down pages without any prior warning.

All your hard work can be wiped out in a blink of an eye.

Also it’s so cheap to get your own domain and your own website set up, its totally worth it!

    All the best to you.

    Chris
